In Tribute to Gerry Hull
Gerry’s good nature and ingenuity were once tested after a long day of prospecting off the Sector 5 Access Road. Having put in a full day in the field, he returned to his truck only to realize that in his haste to get exploring—he’d inadvertently left the headlights on. When the engine refused to turn over, Gerry had little choice but to start the roughly 15-mile hike back to the Burgeo Highway. Late in the evening, he finally made it to the road. But for a lone man at night on an infrequently used highway, the chances of catching a ride were slim. To improve his odds, Gerry improvised a flag with a stick and a twenty-dollar bill.
Luckily, a Department of Highways truck pulled over and the long day was finally at an end. Less fortunately, three days after his misadventure, Gerry found himself back in the woods with a partner and an unfamiliar truck. Their work done, they made their way back to the vehicle only to find that a long walk out awaited them–once again the truck’s lights had been left on and the battery drained.
Bright, funny and loyal–Gerry leaves a lasting legacy as both a gentleman and scholar.
